Probably one of the most spectacular 18th century embroideries that I have ever seen. This 18th century slik & metal thread embroidered chasuble front. Italian in origin. Three bands of urns travel done the middle holding what appears to be apples and pears with small motifs of pears in between. The pear symbolizes divine sustenance, abundance and longevity.
The edges show scrolled leaves and again pears.
All done on a silk and silver lame fabric.
Lined at the back with silk.
Photos are a good representation of actual color and condition.
Measurements
1 meter 11 cm from top of neck to bottom center
The width is
66 cm across at the widest points
Condition
Please note this is the chasuble front only. No back.
Left in as found condition.
Remarkable condition for age. All the colors in the silk embroidery are good strong and present. All metallic embroidery in good codntion and intact. Silk lame ground shows some dissapearance of the silver overlay here and there but nothing distracting in my opinion.
The silk lame ground will show some slight small areas of fray but nothing major and still stable.
The silk backing is mainly intact but has some breaks along the edges, a few small stains, tiny hole towards the bottom and some slight soiling.
