Antique pair of straits chinese embroidered & couched wedding slippers. Probably Malacca, Malay Peninsula. Circa 1880. The pair would have been commissioned for a Straits Chinese bride. Such shoes were worn on the actual wedding day, when the marrying couple, put on their voluminous Qing-style wedding gowns. Embroidered in a gold metal thread (which has now taken on quit a dark patina) with flower design and a butterfly at the front. All done on a red silk velvet. Leather liner inside. Photos are a good representation of actual color.

Condition
Good overall condition for age. The only thing to note is that most of the pile on the velvet has dissapear and one of the slippers has two brakes at the side. Worn but still have a lot of charm.
